Message Hi all,

I´m currently building the demo bevin´s skiff.
The drawings tell you to cut off the (oak) stem at the same height as the side panels and then you put on the bottom.
I suggest to cut off only the aft part of the stem and align the bottom against the forward part of the stem. Only after fitting the bottom you cut off the forward part of the stem. This way the plywood bottom is not exposed to damage at the front side, where it is otherwise very sensitive to damage.

Message You can certainly do this. It does make for a better boat. It makes the building process a little less flexible. Alignment becomes more important and you need to be careful when you plane down the chines to accept the bottom.

You could also do a two part stem.

We thought about the options and picked the one piece stem and the bottom over the stem joint because the building process is easier and less prone to a builders mistake.
